The Story of Kew Gardens in Photographs offers a collection of unique and rarely seen black-and-white images offering a nostalgic view of one of the capital’™s best loved spaces. Informative photo captions and the introductory chapter on Constructing Kew describe the Garden’™s history from the time of the great Victorian plant hunters, through the turmoil of the two world wars, to the post-war years during which the iconic buildings and the plant collection were restored to their former glory. The book ends in the 1970s when colour photography was becoming widespread.The authors, Lynn Parker and Kiri Ross-Jones, have worked in Kew and have extensive knowledge of both its collection and its archives. With more than 250 photographs, many of them previously unseen, the book provides a unique record of the botanical, social, cultural and technological developments in this important and much loved part of London.
