The Japanese Empire Including Korea and Sakhalin c.1900
A reproduction of an antique map of The Japanese Empire circa 1900 including Korea and Sakhalin. Dissected and hand laid on cloth with a unique hand-made slip case.Paper maps are delicate things. Travellers from Georgian times onwards would have to protect their maps from all the dangers they faced on the open road. The maps were expensive, often being used in very cold, and damp conditions. With constant opening and closing a purely paper map would soon disintegrate. To avoid this fate the map was strengthened by laying it down on cloth, a slipcase being provided to give additional protection. This map has been laid down in a way that maps traditionally were. The cloth is 100% natural cotton and the slipcase is handmade.Made in South Molton, Devon.
