The Caliph`s House
Writer and film maker Tahir Shah moved his family away from draining British life to start again in Casablanca – a place of colour, history and romance. This long-abandoned house on the edge of the shanty town had once been the home of the city’s Caliph, or governor, but before Shah moved in it was the home to many jinns. These mischievous spirits decided to hang around as Shah battled the larger-than-life characters (and gangster neighbour) in his quest to transform the house into the perfect home. Not only a story about home-ownership abroad and the battles and anxieties of developing it but also a narrative of the author’s own self-discovery, and his falling in love with Morocco’s magical, multi-faceted contradictions.
