Ski De Randonnee: Haute Ecrins Quevras

140 ski mountaineering routesThere is no shortage of reasons to ski in the Hautes-Alpes’ฆ This very mountainous department, forming an immense ski area around Gap and Brianรงon, brings together two thirds of the Ecrins, most of Queyras, Cerces, part of the Dรฉvoluy, Parpaillon, and the land of Arves. Its average altitude is important, with many great peaks between 3000 and 4000 meters. The starting points for ski tours are often high. In addition to these favorable geographical conditions, there is the privilege of a very pure and sunny sky: the already southern light and the abundant snow-covered landscapes make the Hautes-Alpes a true skiing paradise. It is not uncommon for Brianรงon and Gap to be in the sun when bad weather reigns in the northern Alps! The natural setting of the Hautes-Alpes is very varied, mixing limestone and granite, larch forests, mountain pastures or glaciers. Despite having an endearing history and culture, the region remains little urbanized. National park with long and wild valleys, the Ecrins massif, offers great routes close to 4000 meters: with the Dรดme de Neige des Ecrins, the Pelvoux, the Meije glaciers, the ski touring can make his mark in a world sumptuous, sometimes requiring a solid mastery of alpine techniques. This guide, the second edition of which has been completely updated, presents a fairly complete inventory of ski tours in the Hautes-Alpes, from easy walks to steep skiing (excluding extreme skiing). Most of the beds are affordable from the start of winter. For all difficulties, 520 ski tours in the Hautes-Alpes, classic or new, are offered. To help the reader choose from such an abundance, two levels of description have been adopted: on the one hand, 140 routes, selected for their interest and presented in detail; on the other hand, 380 itineraries, variants or suggestions, described more briefly. The authors: Emmanuel Cabau and Hervรฉ Galley, engineers from Grenoble, have been traveling the mountains on skis or on foot since their childhood. They have also published Ski touring – Isรจre and Ski touring Alpes du Sud together.Alps (France)
