Riding the Iron Rooster

Theroux decides to travel to China by train. He joins a tour in London and travels all the way to Moscow and then on the Trans-Siberian to Irkutsk. In the space of a year he travels on probably every existing train in China, the title of each chapter showing the train number he used to get to his destination. He excels both in portraying his travel companions, from the package tour people to the semi-official watchdogs, and describing natural and human landscape of 1980s China.
