Philip`s Planispheres
Philip`s planispheres, discs showing what can be seen in the sky on any particular date and time at various latitudes – an interesting accessory for anyone on holidays away from the city lights and air pollution, and an invaluable aid for astronomy enthusiasts, both beginners and advanced observers. Each title consists of a disc with a map prepared by the well-known celestial cartographer Wil Tirion which shows stars graded according to their size down to magnitude 5 and grouped into constellations, plus several deep-sky objects such as the Pleiades or the Orion Nebula. In the surrounding margin are months of the year with days. A rotating overlay is divided into hours so that the planisphere can present what is visible in the sky at any time. Accompanying tables help to find positions of the main planets, which due to their movement around the sun cannot be marked on the map itself. The planisphere can also be used to work out the time of sunrise or sunset for any day of the year. Each planisphere is designed for a particular latitude shown in its title, but can also be used within ten degrees north and south of it with only minor discrepancies at the northern and southern horizons.Text on the reverse of the disc and in the accompanying cover provides not only full instructions how to use a planisphere, all clearly illustrated with examples from the planisphere, but also includes notes on the different symbols and the structure of the map of the skies, plus on the exploring the skies season by season.
