Newton Heath 1915

Newton Heath in 1915 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Two versions have been published for this area. The maps cover Newton Heath on the north-eastern side of Manchester, stretching from Hague Street and Ten Acres Lane eastward to Brookdale Park and Aldred Street. The railway is a major feature with the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway`s main line and Hollinwood Branch, carriage works, Lightbowne Siding and engine sheds. Other features include tramways, Newton Heath and Dean Lane stations, Brookdale Park,Ten Acres Mill, Livingstone Mill, All Saints church, Brookdale Hall, St Anne`s church, St Wilfrid`s church, Pavilion Theatre, Orleans Mill, Britannia Mill, Dob Lane End Mill, Meadow Mills, Rochdale Canal, Moston Brook, Lightbowne, etc. On the reverse is a selection of 1918 street directory entries, including Albert Street, Church Street, Culcheth Lane, Dean Laneand Gaskell Street. The 1889 version has the Oldham Rd entry and is taken from the beautiful hand-coloured OS 1st Edition edition.About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25″ OS Series:Selected towns in Great Britain and Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th and early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping and reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4,340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes and many also include extracts from contemporary directories.
