London: The Illustrated History
London: The Illustrated History, a beautifully presented and vividly illustrated history of the capital published by Penguin in collaboration with the Museum of London. The authors, Cathy Ross and John Clark, and the numerous other contributors are all current or former members of the museum’s expert staff. The book offers a new perspective on the capital, from Iron Are cemeteries to Victorian sewers, Viking raids to Zeppelin air raids, Roman temples to Jewish ghettos, Georgian brothers to preparations for the 2012 Olympics (the book was first published in 2008).The book is illustrated with numerous reproductions of material mostly from the Museum’s extensive archives and includes old and new maps, contemporary cartoons, posters and paintings, reconstructions of long-gone buildings and photos of present day London, etc. Special ‘Survivals” sections accompanying many of the chapters show where important remains of buildings from London’s past can still be seen today.
