Leicester South West in 1902-1911 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Leicester is covered by six titles.This map covers a busy area of south Leicester, stretching from Newarke Street southward to Haddenham Road and St Mary`s Fields, and from Minehead Street eastward to Lower Hastings Street. The map is taken from the Special Edition 1912, principally based on the 1902 revision but with houses and other buildings built to 1911 in an outline form. Features include stretch of Great Central Railway with engine sheds, stretches of MR main line and Leicester & Burton Branch but no stations, River Soar, Leicestershire & Northamptonshire Union Canal, Castle Ward, Westcotes Ward, Infirmary, St Mary`s church, Castle Mount, Trinity Hospital, Museum & Art Gallery, cemetery, football ground, county cricket ground, West Leigh, Church of the Martyrs, Wyggeston Hospital, Westcotes Grange, etc. On the reverse are street directory entries for Asylum Street, Aylestone Road, Filbert Street, Narborough Road and Welford Road. About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25″ OS Series:Selected towns in Great Britain and Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th and early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping and reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4,340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes and many also include extracts from contemporary directories.
