Island Peak – Mera Peak
Two peaks of Nepal’s western Himalayas, Island Peak (Imja Tse) and Mera Peak, presented by Swiss publishers Climbing Map on separate contoured and GPS compatible panels at 1:25,000; plus drawings showing approach routes to each peak, plans of Lukla and Namche Bazar, an overview map of the Khumbu Himal region, etc.On one side the main panel is centred on Mera Peak, showing the trekking route from Khote along the Hinku Khola to Khare and the climbing route from there via the Base and the High Camp to the Central Peak; on the reverse is a panel covering the Island Peak area indicating the trekking route from Chukhung and approaches to the peak from the Base Camp via the High Camp plus along the northern ridge. Both panels provide a vivid picture of the area’s topography through contours at 40m intervals, enhanced by shading and graphic relief, plus colouring for glaciers; UTM grid is at 1km intervals. A separate table gives GPS waypoints for the trekking circuit from Lukla via the Mera Peak BC, Amphu-Laptsa, Island Peak BC, Dingboche and Namche Bazar.Several supporting panels offer further information. An overview map of the Khumbu Himal region at 1:200,000 shows the extent of the two 25K panels, main trekking routes including to Mount Everest and Gokyo Lakes, and locations of various facilities and places of interest. Street plans of Lukla and Namche Bazar are presented with lists of various facilities and places of interest (Irish pub, Scottish pub, Starbucks ‘“ take your pick!) including accommodation. Drawings of the two mountains indicate climbing routes and include brief descriptions. Also provided are panorama views from Mera Park, plus a vegetation map of the region with examples of local flowers. Map legend and all the text include English. English names are used for facilities and places of interest highlighted on the maps.
