In Bear Country

Bears are a symbol of the health of an ecosystem – and the global population is dwindling to the point where only eight different species remain. These creatures have long fascinated us and their influence on us can be traced back to the dawn of human history and our troglodyte homes.Brian Payton, journalist and novelist, journeys around the globe in search of these remaining species, confronting poachers in Cambodian jungle (Malayan sun bears) and pondering the politics of panda sex in China. In all he visits India for sloth bears, Peru for spectacled bears, Canada for polar bears, Italy for brown bears, and Colorado for black bears, while he visits France to study cave bears – now extinct.Along the way he warns of the rapid rate of extinction, as species now disappear 100 times faster than they did, brought about by human activity. Describing the lives of local villagers, remote landscapes and lost habitats he enriches our understanding of our relationship with these creatures and why they continue to inspire and frighten.
