Gospel Oak 1912 – 28.2
Gospel Oak in 1912 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Two versions have been published, stretching from Lismore Circus and Parliament Hill eastward to Yerbury Road and Carleton Road. Gospel Oak is in the south-western part of the map, Turnell Park to the east, and Dartmouth Park further north. These areas are heavily built up but the north-western quarter of the map is more open, including part of Parliament Hill and Highgate Ponds. Features include much railway information with Gospel Oak, Highgate Road, Junction Road and Upper Holloway stations, locomotive sheds and junctions; also tramways and electric generating station. Streets include Fortress Road, Junction Road, Mansfield Road, York Rise, Brecknock Road, Highgate Road, Dartmouth Park Hill and countless others. The maps include selected street directories extracts; the 1894 map also has a timetable for the `Outer Circle` line in 1897.About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25″ OS Series:Selected towns in Great Britain and Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th and early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping and reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4,340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes and many also include extracts from contemporary directories.
