France – Ways of St James IGN Map 922
France: Ways of St James to Compostela Map from the IGN presents an overview of all the routes across France taken by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela and the tomb of the apostle St James – the greatest of all goals for thousands of pilgrims in Europe during the Middle Ages. The map was prepared by the IGN and the Association de Coopรฉration Interrรฉgionale ‘Les chemins de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle”.The routes are clearly marked on a base which uses IGN’s general road map of the country. The overprint differentiates between main and alternative pilgrimage routes, and indicates principal starting points such as Vรฉzeley, Le Puy or Arles, as well as important crossroads. Colour-coded symbols, cross-referenced to lists provided in the accompanying information, mark locations of various churches and other cultural heritage linked to the Compostela theme, including UNESCO World Heritage sites, places mentioned by Aymeri Picaud in the 12th century, etc. Map legend for the road map and the overprint includes English. The map also includes panels showing the Camino de Santiago routes across northern Spain and Portugal as well as in the whole of Europe, lists of sites highlighted on the map, plus extensive additional text on the history of pilgrimages, etc. All the text here is in French.
