Footprint Handbooks

The Handbooks books from Footprint are comprehensive guides designed and written for independent travellers who enjoy exploring off the beaten track. Footprint guides have an established reputation, built up since 1921, for catering for more adventurous and individual travellers. An unrestrictive editorial style also gives authors the freedom to capture and explore local cultures, sights and areas that are often not covered in other guides. Footprint, in response to consumer feedback, have started redesigning the layout and look of their Handbook and Focus guides. To ensure they deliver the best quality content in an accessible way, they have integrated these two series, offering now a standard flow and look, including full-colour sections in all titles. The aim is to merge the two series into one, the Hanbooks. This series will feature some hardback and some paperback titles, sharing the same newly designed layout. Some of the paperback Handbooks which replace the Focus titles, usually cover cities and the surrounding regions, and essentially correspond to entire chapters extracted from those Handbooks which cover a broader geographical area. You will easily spot the titles featuring this new design from the book cover style; the new ones, feature the photograph at the top and the title at the bottom, rather than the title on the left and the photograph on the right. So what is different? The Inspirational and practical colour sections work harder to bring you the best examples of the location. The redesigned layout still includes the same reliable and comprehensive information, but it is better presented. The โ€˜Footprint picksโ€™ that highlight the best of each region are now also indicated and referenced in the maps and text. The Listings sections have been redesigned to aid navigations, and the โ€˜Practicalitiesโ€™ section now appears at the back, printed on red rimmed pages for easy access.Widely recognised for their reliability and independent writing style, all of the Footprint Handbooks have the same layout (apart from the exceptions explained above). Introductory sections introduce the reader to the destination, with chapters on planning on your trip and essentials, including practical information and guidance on subjects such as when and where to go, itineraries, sport and activities, arts, getting there and around, eating and drinks, sleeping and a dedicated section on the anticipated carbon footprint involved in travelling to the destination. Each guide is organised geographically by region or country, with individual sections having a particular focus on an extensive range of sights and places of interest. Further, there are also details of accommodation, nightlife, restaurants and any notable local activities. Information boxes throughout the text give readers an insight into local customs, stories and sights of particular interest.A โ€˜Backgroundโ€™ section explores the history, economy, government, education, culture, people, land and environment of the destination in significant depth. There is also a โ€˜Footnotesโ€™ chapter with a basic language guide for travellers and information about the author. A useful distance chart tailored to the destination is also included in the inside back cover.Generally, the Handbooks with hardback will cover countries and extended areas, while the new paperback Handbooks, (which used to be Focus Guides) will cover cities and the surrounding regions.
