Extra Virgin – Amongst the Olive Groves of Liguria

Extra Virgin tells the story of two sisters, Annie and Sarah Hawes, who bought a small stone house deep among the olive groves of Liguria for the price of a second-hand car. Originally planning to visit the Italian Riviera for 10 weeks while in their early 20s, Annie Hawes ended up staying for 20 years. Much to the mystification of the locals, both sisters show incompetence regarding farming and limited understanding of the local olives, wine, food and life. The thrifty villagers of Diano San Pietro response to the ‘˜Foreign Females’™ is to ply them with advice, ridicule, tall tales and copious hillside refreshments. Hawe’™s journal-style account elucidates the reality of life as a peasant farmer in Liguria and in retelling the episodes of her own ignorance, she gives heartfelt flesh and bones to the characters.
