Discovering Britain`s First Railways: A Guide to Horse-drawn Tramroads and Waggonways

Discovering Britain`s First Railways from the History Press is a handy-size, illustrated book devoted to the history, rediscovery and exploration of Britain’™s first railways by examining the network of over 1,500 miles of horse-drawn tramroads and waggonways, illustrated with black and white or colour photos of their present day remains, as well as with pictures from the days when still in use. Approximately a third of the guide’™s 142 pages cover various aspects of the history of this unique form of transport, including construction and operating methods. The rest of the book is devoted to exploring present-day remains of 40 old routes, with accompanying illustrations showing how what often appears to be just an ordinary footpath or a country lane has had very interesting history. Descriptions are grouped by region; the bulk of the entries are in England and Wales, with just two in Scotland.
