Blackhill and Shotley Bridge 1895

Blackhill and Shotley Bridge in 1895 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. The map is double-sided. The main map covers Blackhill, stretching from Cutlers Hall Road and Bridge Hill eastward to Medomsley Road; and from Consett Park and the northern tip of the Consett Iron Works northward to Benfieldside. The centre of Shotley Bridge, by the river, is in the extreme north-west corner. Features include the station, St Cuthbert`s church, Benfieldside House, Benfieldside Cemetery, Durham Road, No 1 Farm, hosiery factory, etc. On the reverse is a large section of adjacent sheet 11.06 taking coverage further north and this includes much of Shotley Bridge with Shotley Bridge station, Whinny House, Snow`s Green, Shotley Park, Shotley House and Shotley Bridge Spa.About the Alan Godfrey Editions of the 25″ OS Series:Selected towns in Great Britain and Ireland are covered by maps showing the extent of urban development in the last decades of the 19th and early 20th century. The plans have been taken from the Ordnance Survey mapping and reprinted at about 15 inches to one mile (1:4,340). On the reverse most maps have historical notes and many also include extracts from contemporary directories.
