Aztecs

The Aztecs, from Thames & Hudson, is an illustrated account of the ancient civilization and its people. Author Richard Townsend has written a study that presents an expanded view of Aztec history and achievement, accompanied by 163 illustrations, with some plates seen in colour for the first time.Beginning with a vivid evocation of Aztec coronation rites, the preceding cultures of Teotihuacan, Xochicalco and Tula are then looked at in greater depth than is common. New discoveries are described and assessed, and the book looks at how a breakthrough in hieroglyphic decipherment has revealed many phonetic elements combining with pictographic forms in Aztec script which recall conventions of classic Mayan writing. The book ends with the conquest of Tenochtitlan by Spanish and Indian allies, as seen from an Aztec point of view, and the conclusion points out the importance of the Aztec legacy in the formation of modern Mexico.
