Antiquity – Origins, Classicism and the New Rome
This architectural history, starting with Egypt and Mesopotamia traces the development of building styles and techniques down to the Christianisation of the Roman Empire and the rise of Byzantium. It is magnificently illustrated throughout, although this is no coffee table book – the focus is very much on the text which is clear, concise and neatly argued. Tadgell throughout relates architectural developments to their historical and cultural contexts.
