Alps Eastern E5
Across the Eastern Alps is experienced walker Gillian Price’s Cicerone guide to the E5 long distance footpath. The 600km E5 route leads from the shores of Lake Constance in Germany to the Italian city of Verona and encounters passes up to 2900 and takes about 30 days to complete through a variety of Alpine landscapes in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. The guide directs walkers through a well-organised network of Alpine refuges and convenient transport links, making it possible to walk shorter sections or attempt the entire route. The guide is structured in two main parts – Lake Constance to Bozen, and Bozen to Verona – encompassing a total of 29 daily stages. Each stage has a general overview, gradient profile and Information Box providing details of time, distance, ascent and descent and the relevant maps. An informative introduction provides practical guidance on walking the E5, when to go, weather, local transport, recommended maps, accommodation, food and drink and local flowers and wildlife. Detailed individual stage descriptions are accompanied by colour sketch diagrams mapping the route in addition to colour photographs illustrating some of the highlights of this diverse route.
