Between the Woods and the Water – On Foot to Constantinople: The Middle Danube to the Iron Gates
In 1933, at the age of eighteen, Patrick Leigh Fermor set out to walk from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople and the first part of his adventure was detailed in A Time of Gifts.Between the Woods and the Water, the second volume in a trilogy, is the account of the second stage of his journey, from Esztergom to the “Iron Gates”, on the border between Yugoslavia and Romania. Crossing the Great Hungarian Plain on horseback he journeyed over the Rumanian border into Transylvania, exploring the forests and mountains, remote castles, monasteries and villages of these beautiful countries little known to the West. He vividly captured the pervading atmosphere of the time and knowing, that shortly after Patrick Leigh Fermor passed through these lands, they were swallowed up by Nazi Germany and then sealed away for nearly 50 years behind the Iron Curtain, makes his account even more fascinating. This is a 2013 reissue of the original book published in 1986, and features redrawn maps and an introduction by Jan Morris.
