What Am I Doing Here was the last of his books to be published during Bruce Chatwin`s short but full lifetime, a 1989 collection of profiles, essays and autobiographical travel stories containing, in Salman Rushdie`s words, `so many of its author`s best anecdotes, his choicest performances`. Drawing on experiences such as his trip to Benin, where he was arrested as a mercenary during a coup, to Boston where he meets an LSD guru who believes he is Christ, sailing down the Volga and making a film with director Werner Herzog, this collection is a poignant reminder of the talent which burnt all too briefly, and of Chatwin`s belief that `Man`s real home is not a house, but the Road, and that life itself is a journey to be walked on foot`.
