Vanoise Ski Touring
Paul Henderson’s Cicerone guide to Vanoise Ski Touring provides an instruction to ski touring in the French department of Savoie and covers the Vanoise national Park and surrounding area. Despite the massive development of ski resorts, including some of the biggest and best in the world, many areas remain untouched and have become the reserve of ski tourers; it is in these areas that you will find the fabled ‘white gold’ of Savoie. The guide is aimed at skiers who find the magnificent, unspoilt scenery and peace and quiet of the mountains as exhilarating as the thrill of a perfect descent. The guide covers all of the main areas of the region ‘“ the Lauziere, Belledonne, Beaufortain, Valloire, a tour of the Mont Thabor, the north Vanoise, Glaciers de la Vanoise, Val d’Isere, Ambin valley, Averole and Carro/Evetters as well as a separate chapter dedicated to ski mountaineering. All levels of difficulties are catered for and the tours range from one day trips to multi-day, hut to hut journeys. As many of the tours start from resorts, they can also be combined with a resort based ski holiday. Eleven routes describe 63 days of skiing and over 100 additional alternatives and variations and has been chosen to reflect the variety of landscape and skiing that makes ski touring in Savoie so special. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by colour diagrams mapping the route as well as gradient profiles and colour photographs illustrating some of the highlights of the region.
