Silent Cities of Flanders Fields: WWI Cemeteries of Ypres Salient and West Flanders (2-book set)
Silent Cities of Flanders Fields: WWI Cemeteries of Ypres Salient and West Flanders from the Belgian publishers Lannoo is a set of two books: a Visitor’s Guide which also includes accommodation recommendations, plus a hardback providing more historical background. Both books cover the same 230 cemeteries – the vast majority of them, of course, of the British and Commonwealth forces, but also Belgian, French, American and German ‘“ and are extensively illustrated with present-day colour photos. The 256-page paperback Visitor’s Guide presents each Commonwealth cemetery with detailed instructions on how to reach it, and gives the number of graves from various nationalities including Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, and Indians. Most entries are accompanied by a layout plan and a list of interesting graves. The guide also includes recommendations of hotels and other tourist accommodation affiliated to the Silent Cities program, all with contact details and photos. The 288-page, larger size commemorative book presents each cemetery with more background information, including notes and photos of selected individual soldiers. Many entries are also accompanied by special longer features, e.g. “George Llewelyn Davies: the proud soldier who as a boy inspired Sir James Barrie’s Peter Pan”. Beautifully produced set, highly recommended for all who are interested in the WWI Commonwealth graves in Belgium.
