Queyras Tour – The GR58 & GR541 in the French Alps
Tour of the Queyras is Alan Castle’s Cicerone guide exploring the walking possibilities in this relatively unspoilt region of the French Alps. The guide covers the GR58 and GR541 trails between the Durance Valley and the Italian border in the shadow of Monte Viso and is one of the sunniest areas of the Alps. The Tour includes the highest point reached on any grand randonรฉe in France – a total of 24 cols above 2000m are crossed, with options to climb up to 17 summits of varying difficulty, five of which are above 5000m. The guide is structured in 12 stages reflecting the number of days it takes to complete the tour. A detailed introduction provides practical information on walking in the French Alps, when to go, accommodation, food and drink, mountain safety and emergencies. Each stage of the Tour begins with an Information Box detailing distance, ascent and descent and estimated time as well as indicating the various locations of the day’s walking by distance. 3 appendices give advice on Gites d’etape and refuges in the region, bibliography and useful addresses, telephones and websites. Detailed route descriptions are accompanied by sketch diagrams mapping the route in addition to colour photographs illustrating some of the highlights of the Queyras.
