Netherlands: ANWB 50K Cycling Maps

Netherlandโ€™s network of sign-posted cycling routes on double-sided maps at 1:50,000 from ANWB, the countryโ€™s main motoring and touring organization. Netherlandโ€™s extensive network of cycling routes, including the LF long-distance cycle paths, consists of numbered junctions joined by sign-posted connecting routes in either direction. At each junction there is an information panel showing an overview map of the whole network with the junction numbers. A second panel shows all the intersections directly connected to that junction. The system enables cyclists to plan their own routes by preparing a list of junction numbers through which they want to travel.ANWB maps give cycling distances between the junctions and indicate which roads, both within the numbered network and outside it, have separate cycling paths. Routes which are part of Netherlands LF network of long-distance cycle routes are marked. A wide range of symbols shows various accommodation options, bars and restaurants, and various places of interest. In the country with predominantly flat terrain and not much need for contour lines, in common with most mapping of the Netherlands landscape information is provided by colouring for woodlands, dunes, etc. The maps show in the margins the coordinates of the Dutch National Grid, are not indexed, and have map legend in Dutch only.COMPARISON BETWEEN THE FALK AND THE ANWB 50K CYCLING MAPS OF THE NETHERLANDS:- Similar area per map, but Falk has larger sheets because of the additional panels with recommended local tours and other tourist information; ANWB maps are smaller and easier to handle.- Falk maps are indexed and have English legend, ANWBโ€™s are not and the legend is in Dutch only (see below).- Falk maps have clearer highlighting of the LF long-distance routes.- GPS: Falk maps give latitude and longitude, ANWBโ€™s have coordinates of the Dutch National Grid.- Falk maps have more symbols indicating various types of accommodation and places of interest.TRANSLATION OF MAIN TERMS ON THE ANWB LEGEND: Fietspad – cycle path; Knooppunt โ€“ junction; Onverharde weg – unsurfaced road; Verboden voor fietsers (gemotoriseerd verkeer) – closed to cyclists (motorized traffic); Hek of afsluiting voor alle verkeer – gate or barrier for all traffic; Rijwielhulpkist – cycle repair โ€œfirst aidโ€.
