London: Braun and Hogenberg`s Elizabethan London 1572 Wall Map

A wall map with a reproduction from the Old Book House of Braun and Hogenberg`s map of Elizabethan London first published in 1572, size 69 x 47cm (27″ x 18.5″ approx). The map is the earliest surviving plan of the whole of London and presents the city much as Shakespeare would have known it.The map, Londinum Feracissimi Angliae Regni Metropolis, was part of a multi-volume Civitates Orbis Terrarum atlas edited by Swiss cleric Georg Braun and drafted by the Bavarian cartographer Frans Hogenberg from a 1550s map which survives only in parts. The map shows the capital already much expanded beyond the city walls, with Charing Cross, Westeminster, Holborn leading to St. Giles-in-the-Fields, Smithfield and Charterhouse, houses along Bishopsgate and beyond Aldgate, the old London Bridge and Southwark, Lambeth Palace, etc. The map is decorated with drawings of contemporary costumes and coats of arms and is presented in an elegant card cover with notes about Elizabethan London.Please note: this title is also available as a folded map.To see other titles in this series please click on the series link.
