Black Londoners

“Black Londoners: A History” celebrates three centuries of achievement of Black Londoners in different walks of life, from genetics to the judiciary. It includes the famous, as well as the obscure but outstanding contributions of non-celebrities, many of whom have never before been recognised in print. A series of themed biographies, “Black Londoners: A History” features: The Arts, Entertainment & Sport, Military, Health, Welfare & Science, Trade, Industry & Enterprise, Civic & Political, London International, Church Leaders, Transport, Educationalists, Writers & Scientists, News & Newsmakers. It includes figures from Dizzee Rascal to Baroness Amos, from Trevor McDonald to Trevor Robinson, and many, many more. These individual histories are illustrated by evocative images, made all the more powerful because often they have been selected by the subjects themselves, from their personal and family collections. These images form an important part of the book`s narrative and reveal our subject`s character; they are often haunting, whimsical, unusual and illustrative of a particular time, moment or achievement.In telling the individual stories of Black Londoners, this book reveals the history of London herself, from slave to imperial economy; during the upheavals of two world wars; in the throes of mass immigration and urban riots of the 1950s and 1980s, and finally as beneficiary of the technological revolution of the twenty-first century. What our subjects share is an active role in the making of the modern history of London. After reading “Black Londoners”, we may all look at this familiar city slightly differently – with even more passion and greater understanding.
