Scott and Amundsen – The Last Place on Earth

Scott and Amundsen – The Last Place on Earth is Roland Huntford’™s dual biography of the two men who raced to the South Pole during what has come to be known as the golden age of polar exploration. Not without its critics for its controversial stance on some topics, not least its purported character defamation of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Scott and Amundsen – The Last Place on Earth is nevertheless a must read for polar enthusiasts. Huntford reexamines every detail of the race between the archetypal Englishman Scott and the adroit Norwegian Roald Amundsen. Scott, who with his four companions, died after coming second in the race, became a worshipped failure, whilst Amundsen, who not only beat Scott but returned alive with all members of his party, became largely forgotten outside of his own country. A gripping book, if not unbiased, Huntford captures the driving ambitions of the era and depicts the complex, often flawed men, who were charged with carrying them out.
